The Queen’s Head on Tryon Street, Chelsea, has been serving gay customers since the mid-20th century. On Sunday it posted the following message to its Facebook page: ‘Unfortunately it’s true, the Old Lady of Tryon Street will be closing her doors for the last time on 6 September. The message said that there will be a farewell party at the pub on Saturday 3 September, adding, ‘We’re bloody gutted as well by the way.’ ‘The Queens Head will be back in some form or another but the place that we all know and love will cease to be.’ ‘We’ve been unable to come to reasonable terms for renewal of the lease on the building with our landlords and therefore we’ll be shutting up shop. The pub is operated the brewers Stonegate Pub Company. The Queen’s Head staff, in a subsequent Facebook posting, emphasized that the brewery was not to be blamed for the closure. ‘Stonegate is a business, and no matter how well the pub is doing if the landlords are asking for too much money then it’s untenable for them to keep the place. They honestly didn’t want to let us go and have been trying for months to come to an agreement with the landlords.’ The pub, in Tyron Street off the King’s Road, is described on its website as once a key gay drinking destination in London that has served the LGBT community or at least 60 years. Stonegate operate around 660 venues across the UK, including the Slug & Lettuce chain and popular gay bars the Two Brewers in Clapham and Kings Arms in Soho. GSN has approached Stonegate for further comment.Īccording to the Land Registry, the building is owned by JPP One LLP. GSN has been unable to contact JPP One for comment or to find out what its plans are for the building. In real estate terms, the Queen’s Head lies in one of London’s most expensive neighborhoods.

The Yard in Soho has been battling potential redevelopment, but this week won the backing of the government planning inspectorate and Westminster Council to block the redevelopment plans. There have been fears over the future of the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in Vauxhall, which was bought by an Austrian property redevelopment company in 2014. LGBTI campaigners have successfully lobbied for that venue to be awarded Grade-II listed status, and are continuing to lobby for further protections to ensure it remains a LGBT cabaret space.
